You probably already have an idea of what you should do when you need to move to a new house. But it also pays to keep in mind the things you should NOT do so as to make the process of moving a smooth and stress-free one.
DON’T park at the spot where the movers’ truck should be. Remember that the moving van needs to be backed up as close to your front door as possible so the movers can get the job done quickly. If you live in an area where parking space is limited, you may want to advise your neighbours of the move and politely ask them to give the movers some space on moving day.
DON’T leave anything inside appliances like washing machines and refrigerators. Be sure to take out all the clothes you recently washed as well as all items in the refrigerator and freezer. Clean the said appliances and dry them thoroughly before getting them packed for moving.
DON’T use uninsured moving services. There are several man-and-van services out there, and it may seem like a good idea to hire such a service if you only have a few belongings and are just moving across town. But many of these guys don’t have the same experience and training professional movers do, so make sure your things are insured against damages and/or loss.
DON’T assume you can handle the move on your own. If you really want to go DIY, then at least get some help from family and friends. Note, however, that relocation generally involves much less stress and even less cost when you let professionals handle it for you.
As long as you make an effort to plan the move properly and do things right, moving can indeed be more of an adventure than a chore.
