This was not a Cloudcamp ! :)

This was not a CloudCamp !

Don't get me wrong, it was a great event and I met lots of interesting people , but it was not a *camp.
The idea was there to have an unconference after the formal sessions, but the formal sessions ran out and there was no time because of food and bar duties.

The event was a mixture of regular Belgian Campers, Virtualization geeks, Open Source folks , obviously there were a couple of "lost" americans...

I Think The Wow is Fixin’ To Start

Wow… even though the Mac vs. PC thing is outside of the Linux world and generally outside of my scope, this thing is starting to get a little ugly — and entertaining.

Let’s take it from the top, shall we?  Apple runs Mac vs. PC ads, showing the faults of originally XP, and now Vista.  Apple runs the commercials FOREVER.  While they were becoming a little stale and annoying, Microsoft announces a $300,000,000 ad campaign — featuring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld.  There were two teaser ads featuring the unlikely pair, and the focus began to become clear: “Windows: Life Without Walls.”  Next, commercials began to appear showing a John Hodgeman-like (PC guy in Mac commercials) Microsoft employee stating that he...

Re: System Administration needs more PhDs

Tom Limoncelli has a post up today entitled System administration needs more PhDs.

He makes some great observations and brings up a lot of interesting questions. The one that I think the others flow from is "Why are good practices so rarely adopted?"

My opinion, gained through observation, is that sysadmins arise from one of two places. Either they start out in relative isolation, or they come from an environment with multiple systems administrators.

The former develop their own ways of doing things through trial and error and/or research. This leads to endless ways of accomplishing the same or similar tasks. The utter heterogeneity of possible platform combinations...

Ubuntu 8.10 ‘Intrepid Ibex’: Some Good, Some Bad, And A Lot Of Ugly

I HAVE to admit to being baffled and not a little amused by the astonishing fervour which surrounds Ubuntu. Most people either love it or loathe it, with equal passion. (By the way, did you hear the latest news? It seems Ubuntu Fanboy Baiting is going to be a new Olympic sport for London 2012). Personally, I feel quite ambivalent toward Ubuntu. It is undoubtedly a good Linux distribution,

EVE Online Speedlinking for October 31st, 2008

It's been another one of those crazy weeks for EVE news, though it was kind of expected being so close to Fanfest 2008. CCP has been coming out with Dev Blogs like there's no tomorrow. I'm particularly excited about the Blockade Runners and Deep Space Transports as reported in Rollin' Rollin' Rollin' by CCP Chronotis. Things look very promising for the Industrialists of New Eden.

In other developments, the next episode of MicroWarpCast will have a slightly different format - YoMma and I will record our own parts and through the magic of editing, I'll combine the two....

Finding An Expired Domain For Your Internet Business

You’ve maybe heard that there are such things as “expired domains” but you’re not sure how buying an expired domain can help you. So what is an expired domain?

Put simply, an expired domain is a domain that hasn’t been renewed.

There could be a number of different reasons for this—maybe the owner forgot to renew the domain, there’s a possibility the domain registrar didn’t remind the owner (or used an out of date email address to tell them), it’s quite likely the domain seemed like “a good idea at the time” but the owner never actually put any content on the site and just let it sit in cyberspace. There are lots of different reasons why...

How Sun Will be rescued

I probably ranted a bit too much on the marketing push that Sun has been trying to make into the Open Source community.
The economical situation isn't really perfect so Sun does deserve some credit too.

Yesterday Techcrunch published an exclusive interview with Jonathan Schwartz on the future of Sun and how Sun will be rescued .
